A miniature quilt can be a fun project if you want to make a quilt but don’t have the time, space, or need for a large one. Mini quilts also use much less fabric and can allow you to use smaller scraps of fabric you may have been saving. Learn how to make a miniature quilt and get some inspiration from Toby Lischko.

Miniature Quilts

Toby begins by talking about what makes up a miniature quilt. While standards can differ, miniature quilts are typically defined as a quilt made from blocks that finish at 4” or less and are generally around 18” to 24” finished, though they can be made much smaller if desired. The blocks of a miniature quilt can be pieced using any pattern of your choosing or you can even fussy cut big prints for mini quilts.

No matter what size you decide to make your mini quilt, Toby says that one of the most important aspects of a miniature quilt is that it should still look like a full-size quilt, meaning that all of the components need to be in proportion. This means that all of your blocks, sashing strips and borders all need to be proportional to one another in the design of the mini quilt.

The next component that Toby discusses is the fabric to use when making them. She recommends avoiding large scale prints as they are not going to come across well on the tiny pieces needed to make a mini quilt. She then discusses some useful tools when making a mini quilt, including the rotary cutter she likes to use, and how she ensures an accurate and consistent seam allowance when sewing.

Toby then demonstrates how to make a mini quilt block step-by-step and wraps up the video by showing you several examples of wonderful miniature quilts to get you inspired to make your own. If a traditional mini quilt isn’t quite your style, see how to embellish mini art quilts.
