Lexington Sampler Challenge: Block 1

Hello and welcome to the challenge!

The National Quilter’s Circle Lexington Quilt Block Challenge will only be available through August 8th!

This exciting 9-part block challenge pattern offers you a choice to make either a large throw size quilt, with a finished size of 68 ½” square, or a bed size quilt with a finished size of 88 ½” square. There will be a bonus block available to use in place of the center 15″ square, should you choose to make it. If you decide to make the throw size quilt, your challenge will end in Week 8; the bed size quilt will end Week 9.

For the cream and red featured bed size quilt, fabrics are from La Vie en Rouge collection by French General for Moda. This collection will be available in shops this August/September (the sweet folks at Moda were so kind to allow us to show you this gorgeous collection ahead of time). The alternate white/black/gray modern example of the throw size quilt was made by Ashley Hough using solid fabrics she personally selected. The cream and red version will be patterned through this challenge as both the throw and the bed size quilt. Use your imagination to select fabrics from your stash or plan an outing to your favorite quilt or fabric shop like Ashley did, and enjoy choosing from what they have to offer. Either way, this project can easily be customized by tapping into your own, unique creativity!

IMPORTANT: Please read through the following information before beginning your project.

Please answer the following two questions:

1. What size quilt do you wish to make?

  • Large Throw Size: 68 ½” x 68 ½
  • Bed Size: 88 ½” x 88 ½”

In Weeks 1 and 8, the pattern will be separated into two PDFs; download your chosen quilt size file.

2. Design choice: Will you be making the mystery BONUS Block to replace the 15″ square in the center of the quilt?

  • I’m going to use the 15″ square of fabric in the center of my quilt top, as seen in both Susan’s and Ashley’s quilts. I like how the open space gives a place for the eye to rest.
  • Although it remains a mystery until Week 7, I prefer to make the BONUS Block for the center of my quilt. I like the idea of filling the center space with a block.

Depending on your choice, there are a few specific yardage adjustments that are noted within the Yardage Requirements.

Click the button below to download a PDF with instructions for your chosen quilt size that includes tips before you begin your project, yardage requirements, and the pattern for Block 1. And make sure to share your progress in the Quilt Block Challenge Facebook Group – we can’t wait to see everyone’s work! Have fun and enjoy the journey!
