Welcome to the wonderful world of Mosaics where you will learn all about making quilts that look like stone or tile mosaics. Use regular quilting cottons or explore unique fabrics such as silk and velvet along with iron on adhesive as you cut and place little tiles to create fun motifs. Use one of the many designs provided or come up with your own design then finish it with simple edge quilting and a quick and easy iron on binding.
Heather has included several easy, eye catching designs for you to work with. In this segment she’ll introduce those designs and show you how to make simple cut outs to use as a fabric placement guide. She will talk about color selection and how to use “opposites” in the motif and background sections of your chosen design. She’ll also talk about various iron-on adhesives and how to prepare your fabrics for use. Next you’ll be shown how to layer up your mosaic quilt and walk you through placement of your design template.
Now the fun begins! In this segment, Heather will introduce different ways of approaching a design and walk you through the free form cutting that she uses for all of the fabric “tiles” used in the motif portion of your mosaic. She will help you understand how to use the cut out motif template for special cutting and linear placement of the tiles and how to achieve equidistance in your negative space/soldering. You’ll get to see how she goes about filling in all of the interior space of her fancy heart motif.
In this segment Heather will introduce ways to fill in the background area of your mosaic including how to achieve contrast through color selection as well as size, scale and shape of the fabric tiles. This information is vital to creating a design that sings!
Quilting your mosaic is easy and quick! In this segment, Heather will share ideas on how to go about quilting your miniature mosaic and give some additional information on quilting on a larger scale. Whether you choose to free motion quilt or use a walking foot and guided machine quilting, the stitching is easy and stress free.
In this segment, Heather will show you how easy it is to finish your Miniature Mosaic with an iron-on binding and use decorative stitch to hold it in place. This is a great little technique that you can use on a myriad of wall and art quilts.
