Quilted Accessories Session 3: Decorative Additions
Heather ThomasDescription
Heather will position all of the fabrics for the surface of the design and iron them in place. Then she will add any decorative additions such as swirls, borders etc to complete the look.
So this is perfectly acceptable, I think it looks nice and cool. And I could leave it at this, but then I remembered that I have some more of this great fabric. And since I have feathers here, I might as well use this bird here. So if I turn this over, I've got this whole space on the back of the pouch that I could add something decorative. So I think I'm going to put the birdie there.
So, let's see what happens when we clip and rip this. And, yeah. Yeah, that looks wonderful. So we're gonna put the bird there and again we're going to be using our iron on adhesive. Yeah.
We'll find that and going to use black this time, because that's what came out of the bag first and it doesn't matter. They're just still iron on adhesive and I'm gonna cut it. So it's a little bit smaller than this piece and then I'll use it to hold it down. And again, these are all temporary holes because we're gonna do a lot of stitching on this. Put it on the back there and position this where I want it.
Am I gonna measure it and make sure it's straight? No. I'm gonna eyeball it. Now you could do this before you quilt the thing or you could do it after you quilt the thing, it's up to you. I also know that I'm going to highlight this portion and this portion by some twisted fabric.
And so I'm gonna look through my fabrics and see what I can use that's gonna add some nice contrast around here. And I think definitely what I'm going to want is yellow for this portion. So I'm gonna take this yellow fabric and I'm going to rip it into some narrow strips And let's see what else I have in yellow. I've got this bright yellow here too. 'Cause I'm gonna need a strip for each side and I'll rip a strip there.
So I'll use these during that stitching and I'm gonna twist them up like so, and put them on that edge and you can see how that's really gonna highlight that bird. So I'll use the yellow around here because they're really, it's the birds orange and red and the yellow's gonna show up well against it. But here, because I've got this yellow already, I want something that's gonna contrast well with that. So I've got all the yellow here and I've got kind of mostly oranges here. So I think I'm gonna pick a bright pinky color, something I've got that's long enough.
There we go. So I just wanna make sure this is long enough and then I'll clip and rip it. And kind of debut it. Oh yeah. So I'll have that go all the way across there and that'll make a really nice decorative part for that flap too.
So we know what we're gonna do to doll this puppy up and now we're ready. to go ahead and stitch it.
