Backing Fabric
National Quilters Circle EditorsThe backing fabric is the essential bottom layer of the "quilt sandwich," which consists of the quilt top, batting (insulation), and the backing. Its primary purpose is to provide a stable foundation, hold the batting in place, and serve as the surface through which the final quilting stitches pass. Learn about how to choose and use backing fabric in this video.
Here's something to think about when you're choosing your backing fabric. If you've got a lot of white in your quilt, um, usually you're going to have white batting behind that. But if you choose a backing, like I did on this one that's dyed on both sides, it may pull that color through a little bit. And if you kind of look in here, you can see where maybe my white thread looks like it has a little hint of the orange. So my suggestion would be that you look for a fabric that maybe is not dyed on both sides.
If you've got a lot of white background in your fabric, just a little something to keep in mind when you're shopping for your backing fabric.
