Accessories for Quilting Rulers

Duration:   4  mins

Description

Clear acrylic quilting rulers in various sizes are a favorite to use among most quilters; however, they can tend to slip on fabric. ZJ Humbach shows you several quilting tools that can be used to help hold your rulers in place and make cutting safer and more efficient.

Fabric Grippers

Fabric grippers are small, sticky dots that can be added to your quilting rulers, and ZJ shows how easy they are to use. She demonstrates how to position them in the corners of the ruler and how they can be easily removed or repositioned. Since the fabric grippers are clear, the ruler can still easily be seen through, no matter where the dots are placed. Fabric grippers help hold quilting rulers securely on top of the fabric, preventing it from slipping and making cutting fabric with a rotary cutter safer.

Static Stickers

Static stickers are another accessory that can be added to quilting rulers. Static stickers come in a large sheet with a grid on the back, making them easy to cut to any size. ZJ demonstrates how a strip cut from the static sticker sheet can be placed on the back of a ruler and used to help line up fabric. Having a line highlighted with the static sticker can help make cutting more efficient.

Other Uses

Since static stickers come in large sheets, there will be plenty left for other uses after a strip is cut for any of your quilting rulers. Consider cutting a small strip and sticking it to your machine as a seam allowance guide. Since the sticker has a small amount of height to it, lining fabric up along the sticker is quick and easy. Static stickers can also be used for sewing room organization, as you can write on them and use them as labels. Static stickers adhere with static cling, rather than an adhesive, so there is no need to worry about a sticky residue on your machine or any other surface if it needs to be repositioned.

Where can I purchase the static stickers? I checked my local quilting stores and Amazon with no luck. Thank you.

Have you ever gotten frustrated especially with your small rulers at how they slip and slide on your fabric when you're getting ready to cut? Well, I've got a couple of little accessories that I wanna show you that will prevent your rulers from slipping and also help you be more accurate with your rulers. The first thing I wanna show you are these clear fabric grippers. And the nice thing is when you have them on, I've got them in the corners here, you can still see through the grippers to your fabric and you can also read your measurements on the ruler. And the nice thing is, your ruler doesn't move, it just stays right there on the fabric where you put it. So let me show you how you do this. They're very, very simple and they are so worth the investment. They are a good safety thing so that you will have less chance of cutting your finger with rotary cutter. You just peel this off, they just pop out like that out of the package and you put one in each corner and they stick and grip and they also will come back up if you need to replace or replace the positioning or if you decide you don't wanna use it on that ruler anymore, you just put them on and then quickly your problem is solved and you won't be having the issue of a sliding ruler anymore. So I highly recommend those, those have just been a godsend. Second thing I want to show you is a product called a static stickers and I love these, static stickers come on a grid like this, and they're bright pink. And so you cut them off for whatever size you want and then you simply peel back and that's probably the hardest part. And let's say, you need to cut three inch strips. You just lay this on the ruler at the three inch mark and go ahead and trim it. And if you get it on there crooked, guess what? You can simply replace it and push it down. And now when I want to cut rapidly my three inch strips, I know exactly where I need to put it so that I know that that's three inches and I just, oops, keep coming in and I'm all set to go. Now another way that I like to use this is especially when I'm doing an angle, there are many, many markings, let me put this on some fabric so you can see. On a ruler you will usually have a 60 inch angle, you'll have the 60 going this way and the 45 sometimes you'll have a 30 inch and sometimes it can be a little confusing which way you need to put your ruler. So I find if I just put this on the angle mark, line it up nice and neat, that then when I'm coming along and I need to cut an angle, I could either have it this way so that I know which edge to lay down. I'm just all set to go. And then if I need to come along and have my 60 degree going the other way, that's very simple too. I'm all set. So this is a wonderful little gizmo and as soon as you're done cutting, you take it off and you're all set for the next time. You can hang onto your strips and use them again and again and again. The nice thing is with the grid on the back, you know exactly where to cut you can either cut with scissors, or if you have an old blade in your rotary cutter, take your ruler and cut it with that and hopefully you will find these two accessories to be a good tool to add to your ruler and make your quilting safer and more efficient.
