Not all quilts need to end with a plain binding! In this class, taught by art quilter Heather Thomas, you will learn 10 different techniques for adding edges and finishes to your quilted projects:
- Satin Stitch with Rattail
- Two Toned Double French Binding
- Sandwich Facing with a Wavy Edge
- Gathered Ribbon Edging
- Single Fold Hand Beading Binding
- Raw Edge Sectioned Binding
- Iron-on Curved Edge Binding
- Ripped Iron-on with Twisted
- Couched Fabric
- Single Fold Ripped Edge with Fray & Couched Ribbon
Whether it's a Two Toned Double French Binding or Burnt Edges, each of these techniques can add some extra beauty or funkiness to the edges of your quilts.
Heather will go over, in detail, using Rattail, Iron-on adhesives, hand beading and lots more. This is a can’t miss, fabulous class; packed full of interesting and unusual endings!
Class Sessions
Session 1: Introduction

In this session Heather will introduce the idea of alternative edges for quilts, show several samples and talk about the various products and supplies that will be used to execute the ten different edge and finishes that will be done in the class.
Session 2: Seven Funky Edges

In the session Heather will show five samples of techniques that will not actually be demonstrating in the class. However, they are interesting and easy enough to grasp from a verbal description of how they are done. These techniques include the following; Frayed edge backing with dyed batting, Dyed batting, Alternating Width Zigzag, Traditional Facing and Turned Quilt Edge with hand stitching.
Session 3: Tradition with a Twist

Watch as Heather demonstrates three different edge techniques that are based on some timeworn traditional finishing techniques. These include; Satin Stitch with Rattail, Two Tone Double French Binding and Sandwich Facing with a Wavy Edge.
Session 4: Edges with Embellishments & Funk

This session is all about the bling and the funk. Heather demonstrates three finishing techniques that will really pump up the interest to the edge. Included are; Gathered Ribbon Edging, Single Fold Hand Beaded Binding and Ripped and Raw Edge Sectioned Binding.
Session 5: Complex Edges & Finishes

In this final session Heather will demonstrate 4 different edges and finishes. Each is complex, unusual or non-traditional. They include the following; Iron-on Curved Edge Binding, Ripped Iron-on with Twisted, Couched Fabric, Single Fold Ripped Edge with Fray insert and Couched Ribbon.
Session 6: Final Overview

Your Instructor
Heather Thomas
Heather is a mixed media fiber artist with a passion for color and a dedication to teaching. After a decade of making original yet traditional work, she began venturing out toward art quilting, embellishments, and mixed media work. With more than 12 years of studying and teaching color and design under her belt, she wrote her second book, A Fiber Artists’ Guide to Color & Design, which came on the heels of her very popular first book, Fabric Embellishing: The Basics & Beyond. In 2011 Heather was a guest writer for Quilting Arts magazine with a multi-part feature on Free Style Machine Quilting.
