In the segment on fabric the author says you CAN/Should store fabric, quilt squares, etc. in plastic containers. Which is correct?

I know the prevailing opinion about plastic totes is not to use them as you would be trapping moisture inside, however, I live where the relative humidity is almost always in single digits. Therefore I am not closing much moisture in my bins. It all depends on your situation. I am much more concerned about light especially on the fabric that I am storing long-term. When I was a textile science major in college we learned all light damage is irreversible.

I’d put something between the fabric and cardboard, as the acids in cardboard will definitely stain and weaken (chemically react) with fabrics over time. Perhaps an old sheet or pillowcase, acid-free paper, etc.

Thread will get dusty and that is bad for your machine…I have mine in a plastic drawer unit under my sewing table.

You also will want your machine to have a needle down position and feed dogs that can be lowered. A knee lift bar is also handy when quilting. Good luck.

It sends me to Part 4 instead.

I appreciate the info on storing fabric. I inherited fabric from both grandmothers (who were quilters) and had stored it all in cardboard boxes under my machine since I have limited space in my little sewing area. I recently bought some totes to transfer it all into thinking it would be easier to find what I was looking for but after reading this article I’m rethinking my decision. Is cardboard better than nothing?
