Pattern Freebies: GO! Something's Fishy Beach Bag Pattern

Quilted beach bag The perfect beach bag has space for a few towels, a water bottle, and of course, the sunscreen. A functional beach bag is good, but one that weds style with practicality will be the one that you grab every time you head to the pool or to the beach. The Something’s Fishy Beach Bag Pattern from AccuQuilt is the bag that will take you to all of your summer hot spots with style and function.

Even if you are not one who hangs out at the pool very often, the Something’s Fishy pattern is incredibly versatile. This bag would be a perfect choice for a carryon bag if you are flying somewhere. Your snacks, magazine, cell phone charger, and a light throw will fit just right in it. Also, if you need a library book bag, a knitting bag, or even a diaper bag for that favorite tot in your life, the Something’s Fishy bag will fit the bill.

Since this is an AccuQuilt pattern, of course, it recommends the use of a fabric cutting machine. The die cut machines do allow you to skip the tedious steps of cutting and measuring fabrics for the quilt pieces. However, if you don’t mind cutting fabric, it is doable without the die cutting machine. Just be sure that you measure carefully and cut the pieces exactly at the specified dimensions.

What You’ll Need

For the pieced portions of the bag, you will need three coordinating fish or beach themed fabrics. The sample bag uses mainly blues with red as the “fishy” accent pieces. Of the red print, you will need ¼ yard. Of the blue fish print, you will need ½ yard, and of the wave print, you will need 1½ yards. You will also need an assortment of blue solids, which you may already have in your fabric stash. The wave print is also used for the back of the beach bag, the handles, and the lining of the bag. The fabrics of the sample bag are from the Pets a’ Plenty collection by Michael Miller. As with all fabric creations, you can use your imagination or whatever fabrics are available to you to make your bag a one-of-a-kind project.

Along with the basic fabrics, you will need coordinating thread, two 17½ inch rectangles of fusible batting for the padded part of the bag, and lightweight, fusible interfacing to reinforce the handles of the bag.

What You’ll Get

After you’ve gathered your fabrics, you can begin cutting. The AccuQuilt pattern includes a detailed checklist of the number of pieces along with their correct dimensions. It’s very easy to just go down the list and cut your quilt pieces. After the pieces are cut, clear step-by-step instructions are provided for constructing the quilt blocks along with color diagrams. These are simply pieced blocks with no strange angles or turns; straight line stitching and attention to detail is all that is necessary.

After you’ve pieced the blocks, the instructions give you the step by step directions that you’ll need to assemble the quilted, fully-lined bag. This bag even has box edges, which are much easier to sew than you might expect.

The dimensions of the completed bag, without the handles, are 16½ inches, by 23 inches, by 4 inches. Take this bag wherever you happen to be headed for the weekend, or use it as a general all-purpose tote throughout the week. Happy quilting!
