Thanks for contacting the National Quilters Circle with your question. To clarify, I’m assuming by applicate you are referring to applique? The process used in the “stained glass” technique is achievable. Many quilters will attend a class to learn the process. Once all the various shapes are arranged, adding the “leading” outline just requires thinking through the process of applying the pieces in layers. The same as in any applique, adding the last layer that continuously covers as many cut edges as possible.

Keep practicing on the longarm quilting. This portion of the process has a completely different skill set from the patchwork and it can take a bit more time to sharpen. Achieving a confidence level you are comfortable with just takes time and repetition.

The last question refers to cutting (96) 4-1/2″ squares. There are many ways to accomplish the cutting. The traditional method is simply to cut (11) 4-1/2″ strips x WOF and then sub-cut each strip into 4-1/2″ squares. If you have a new cutting blade, those strips could be stacked three deep and then sub-cut, making the process go more quickly. Other tools like a stripology ruler or a cutting system like the Accuquilt offer dies to assist in the cutting process.

      Happy Quilting,

The templates are labeled directly in the middle of the cut out shapes. Please see pages 18-24 of the downloadable pattern. Thanks!

I have never done paper piecing are applicate. I think the bias tape outline of the Iris looks challenging. My Husband tells me I am very talented, even though I still struggle with free motion quilting on my long arm. Do you think a beginner in applicate will be able to do this?

Thank you for contacting NQC. I believe from the dimensions of the outer borders with cornerstones that the finished size is approximately 54″ x 54″.

Just re-watching this today. The pattern is written with both with blue on left side, Grey on top and black on bottom. One of the blue sections needs to be on the right. Paragraphs opposite Figure 4
