Welcome to week one of the National Quilters Circle Quilting for a Cause Quilt Block Challenge! The first block is ready, are you? Let’s get to it!
Over the course of the next 7 weeks we will be releasing blocks for you to make throughout the week. Our managing editor, Ashley Hough, has designed a unique quilt pattern for this special challenge. When finished, the quilt will be 48’’ x 60’’ and each finished block will be 6’’.
In this week’s instructions, there are three different blocks (Block A, B and C). From the three patterns you will make 4 of Block A, 2 of Block B and 2 of Block C.
Click the button below to download a PDF with instructions for your first block. And make sure to share your progress in the Quilting Block Challenge Facebook Group – we can’t wait to see everyone’s work!
For this challenge, we partnered with Project Linus, an organization that will accept your homemade quilt and distribute them to children in need. We know how sharing a quilt with someone can make the whole experience even more worthwhile and we hope to donate as many quilts as possible. However, you can still participate in the challenge if you choose not to donate the finished quilt.
Find your local Project Linus chapter for donation here!

If you haven’t signed up for the Quilt Block Challenge, there’s still time! You can sign up here to make sure you get the block assignments delivered to your inbox each week.

Im looking forward to making this quilt.
Is there supposed to be text (directions) in the pattern along with the pattern pictures? I have pictures but no directions. This is my first challenge and am not sure how this works. Is figuring out the cutting also part of the challenge?
Hi there Shannon!
Welcome and we’re excited that you’re joining us for this challenge! It’s going to be fun!
That’s a great question. You’ll find all the information you need by downloading the pattern PDF on the web page. You’ll want to scroll down and read carefully for the cutting instructions!
If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to email, chat, or call us at 1-855-706-3538.

I have re-downloaded the week 1 pdf and looked for cutting instructions. There is nothing on the pages except blocks and arrows to show pressing directions. I understand each finished block will be 6″. Again, I ask, am I required to figure out the math as part of the challenge? There are no other directions on the PDF.
Hi Shannon,
Here is block 1 instructions: https://www.nationalquilterscircle.com/article/quilting-for-a-cause-week-1/
Once you click on download you will see the cutting instructions half way down the page.
Have fun with the challenge.
