Mystery Paper Piecing Quilt Block Challenge: Fabric Requirements

The Mystery Paper Piecing Quilt Block Challenge is only one week away! If you haven’t signed up for the challenge there’s still time! Sign up now! Before we get started, we have some preliminary information to help you out.

First, we’d like to introduce Toby Lischko, our wonderful quilt designer for this challenge! Check out Toby’s website Gateway Quilts & Stuff to see more of her awesome designs! You can also find Toby on her blog, Facebook page, and Instagram.

Second, and probably most important, are the fabric requirements (which you will find below)! You can make this quilt as scrappy as you want, but you can also buy new fabrics with the guidelines provided.

Once you choose your fabric, be sure to post photos of it on the Facebook group page!

Are you interested in buying a fabric kit? You can purchase a blue or purple one here on Toby’s website.

It’s always so hard to choose fabrics when you do not know the pattern. So based on the title of the quilt (Ice Crystals), would batiks work with this pattern?

I normally make a king sized quilt or a baby quilt. What can a 58” square quilt be used for? Sorry, not trying to be difficult.

Just learning the freezer paper technique. I am working on a quilt of many stars for my grandson. Ivam using patterns from books by Carol Doak. I have copied the designs I want and punched the pattern on freezer paper. This seems like it eill be so much easier than sewing through paper.

I have only made two of three small paper pieced projects (ppp). But, while at a quilt camp, I was able to watch and listen to a group of women working on a ppp, it was an intricate poinsettia. Completed, it was fantastic!!! With MQCs mystery challenge and admiring everyone’s fabric choices, my creative fabric choices are flowing. I’m going to start out looking at my batiks.

This will be my first challenge while learning paper piecing. I’m excited and nervous all at the same time. Think I’ll use scraps and remnants to start then if I like it I’ll buy yardage.

I bought a stunning (read: complicated) pp quilt pattern because it was sooooo pretty. I love pp but am a novice. I think this is going to be a wonderful chance for me to polish my skills before I attempt a 100” x 100” paper pieced quilt. Ha! Fun and quilty games! Happy to be part of this group! 😊
