It’s time to gather your fabric and supplies for the latest quilt block challenge: Windmills and Pinwheels. This challenge features a quilt designed by Toby Lischko of Gateway Quilts and Stuff.
Appliqued Quilt (left) and Pieced Quilt (right)
The finished quilt size for the large option is 86” x 86” and the small option is 58” x 58”
The Windmills and Pinwheels quilt is a fun blend of pieced points and curved applique. Made in a medallion style, you can either piece or applique a large center block and then build upon the center as you work your way through this eight- week challenge. For several of the blocks you will be given the choice of patterns- one a pieced block designed by Toby and one a slightly different pieced version designed by Ashley that incorporates applique. The applique design inspiration came from one of the main print fabrics, which features flowers. While we have provided applique templates for you to create the same designs, feel free to play around and create your own- we can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Find the fabric requirements available for download below! And make sure to share your fabric choices in the Quilt Block Challenge Facebook Group – we can’t wait to see everyone’s work!
If you haven’t signed up for the Quilt Block Challenge, there’s still time! You can sign up here to make sure you get the block assignments delivered to your inbox each week.

Where are the instructions for the Applique version of the quilt?
Dear Joanne,
Thank you for contacting us.
You have two options to make this quilt, the first is with no applique. You just download the blocks weekly and finish as normal. If you’d like to make the applique patterns, they you start with the center applique block (provided today), and mix and match your own quilt. There will also be applique patterns provided on weeks 2, 3, and 7.
We only had block 1 on the page, but we’ve updated it to have the applique option now.
If you have any other concerns, please contact us at 1-855-706-3538, or chat with us on our site.

Hi all, I am a beginning quilter. I have made several table runners, place mats, etc, but not full quilts, so, this will be the stupid question of the day, I’m sure. I am looking at the fabric requirements, which say that there are 8 fabrics for the large quilt and 7 fabrics for the small quilt. I am making the small quilt and note there are only 6 fabrics listed for it, as the last two state that they are for the large quilt only. So, was this a trick or an error or a tricky error? 🙂
Thank you for your help.
– Bonnie
Dear Bonnie,

I’m afraid that just learning to quilt, I may have to alter the pattern according to my skills.
I am thinking the same thing — adjusting the quilt to my skills….but not sure how I’d do that — what are you thinking????
Where do I find the applique instructions?

Well, I’m confused. I printed the pdf showing the color picture of the applique center block but can’t find the fabric requirements for the applique. And in an earlier comment, you said you had updated block 1 to also now include the applique. I just (8 pm June 21st) printed the 2 downloads and block 1 does not mention the applique. I feel like I have lost my mind.

My first challenge. New quilter. Very excited.
This will be my 1st challenge. I’m looking forward to seeing how everyone’s will look so different. I’m also looking forward to hopefully improving my skills. Ready to go!
First challenge
My quilt will be scrappy because I don’t have yards of fabric unless it is already for a quilt project. I will still have fun and take from my stash. Looking forward to doing this quilt.
Can’t wait to start
What accuquilt dies would I need in order to use my cutter? And are the fabric requirements different if using the Accuquilt? If this information is in the files somewhere, I’ve missed it – please point me in the right direction. Thanks!
Dear Miriam,
Thank you for contacting us.
The die is the same size for both the large and small quilt. And yes, they are from the 8″ cube.
Each week will have the cutting instructions in the download. week one: https://www.nationalquilterscircle.com/article/windmills-week-1/

Are there specific sewing directions for the AccuQuilt? And how can I easily find all the directions in one place? I can’t seem to find where everyone is getting them. I’m having to go to different emails to get what I need.
